“THE MOUSE NO LONGER SMELLS”
Men and mouse in spite of the common “M” share around 99% of genes .The 1% difference states that olfactory and reproductory genes are much more in mouse than in man. So, it is quite obvious that a man is not that proficient with his olfactory functions or else he has become accustomed to the sense of foul smell!
It is also found that 90% of genes are associated with various diseases in human and mouse, supporting mice as a model organism.
What are we talking about? It means we are what we see around us. That is to say, we share a common structure. Also, there is a common cause for the problems that exist in both man and mouse. So we face the repercussions of our association with surroundings which is curbing both our sense of smell and our ability to remove it. The mouse here stands for not just you and me but also the system, surroundings and environment that we breathe in.
Looking at the reality, instead for being an agent of change, we often tend to put critical issues in the backburner taking the easy way out. But how close are we getting to our dreams with an escapist attitude like this. Currently India stands at 82 out of 180 in global corruption perception index, lower than many of our Asian brothers. People are dying more in stampede than bomb blasts, life is becoming cheaper than technology, financial crisis and sudden layoffs are some of the hot burning issues that we read in newspapers everyday. In a recent survey, it was found that about 51.32% of Indians state that India is a corrupted nation.
Why is it that any issue stays in the public memory for sometime keeps popping up for refreshments for as long as the public interest in it stays alive and gradually dies its natural death? We tend to theorize our concerns rather than taking a step forward for eradicating it from the system. The truth is tough to digest as there is a ‘hole in the soul’ of every system. There are elements everywhere that tend to corrupt it. But what compels them to be evil? There may be an inherent characteristic which will not let us commit to an evil unless there's some benefit and surety of not being witnessed. This benefit can be tangible and intangible, materialistic, intrinsic, psychological, spiritual or can take any form with change and innovation in our thoughts with other things.
The doubt is whether the world and the things around us are getting more complex or simpler? It seems we are shifting to an era where we are dependent on software, hardware, machines: things which are not living. This because we believe that this is non-mortal form of attaining supreme knowledge and power. The fact to be noticed here is that even a man’s life is cheaper than the technology. We are moving to a spoon feeding era which is curbing intelligence and thought process in all of us and giving power in the hands of few. These few design our systems contributing to short term and visible interests. How much in depth do we understand this and is going to sustain over generations, is a question which least interests us. Taking the latest financial crisis clearly illustrates how the people whom we have given power to take decisions, turn a blind eye towards the most obvious. From the subprime bubble to recession was not a 24 hours story. In fact the irony here is , the media and journalism which is the mediator and information supplier, kept filling its tabloids with page 3 personalities , their lifestyles and related latest gossip. It failed big time to highlight the issues which can change the entire world's condition.
When the Prime minister after the recent Mumbai terror commented 'NO BODY WOULD BE SPARED', it is to be noted that fourteen years has passed since serial bomb blast in Mumbai had taken place where still the justice is pending. All our bollywood actors, our builders, our Gutka kings can meet the main conspirator Dawood but our Government can not catch him. Till today he is not caught. The Reason is simple; all ministers are hand in glove with him and any attempt to catch him would expose everybody. This statement 'NOBODY WOULD BE SPARED' is nothing but a cruel joke on the unfortunate people of India.
The world seems a land of fools and idiots. The tragedy is on one side we are reaching moon, people are so intelligent and on other side the politicians have converted nectar into deadly poison. Common man is everything: Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian Schedule caste, but Indian. Why do an actresses seems so happy in media despite having so many controversies and issues?
What kind of life do politicians have with changing power structure, hidden motives and means to achieve them thereby making conscious efforts to portray a clear image?
The world pretends to believe in x theory of motivation but is practicing more of y. The profit making and convenience is embedded into our genes now, it is right to say that when it starts smelling very badly u loose the sense of smell.
I feel we trick and treat ourselves at the same time, converting our problems into a vicious circle. For example, we create competition in the organization, giving materialistic rewards. This culture inflates materialistic needs leading to antagonism, aggressiveness and dissatisfaction. To deal with this we conduct surveys and waste energies in identifying and implementing ways to curb problems.
What’s the inference of all this? First, we don't tackle problems and then we contribute in their creation only to waste more energy.
The mouse certainly smells and we have become to proficient in ignoring it.
Can there be any concrete solution? Maybe there is!
The solution lies in eliminating complexity which curbs creativity, multi-thinking than multi-tasking, prioritizing, striking a balance and most importantly use change and innovation only for growth and advancement.
Preparing the gen "Y" for gen "Z" is a challenging task ahead. The culture is already set, only two ways to improve it, either use "commodity practice" (self created term where I think employees can treat their customers/ clients as commodities and be absolutely committed to their work) or "emotional practice" (term self generated again where employees can get personal and emotional with each customer/client for long lasting relations). This is like going back to the olden times and searching for the equilibrium position. Equilibrium will lead to sustainability which can be achieved through “emotional practice”.
Now, looking at the other side of the coin, the fact says, points of similarity between mouse and human genes are significant representing bits of genetic material that have survived, intact, over 75 million years of evolution.
Probably the nature says something is working.
It is something like becoming a potato possessing the talent to meld and gel with all kinds of vegetables to form various types of curries. Similarly, we have the ability with a zest to keep us going in spite of all odds. History bears the testimony to the fact that there have been growth drivers alive across all ages like Albert Einstein gave the true meaning of invention to world, Orkut Buyukkokten exemplified innovation, Richard Brandson thought of planes while flying in hot air balloons and so on.
Unbeatable attitude and obsession for details is the need of the hour. Passion to co-exist in harmony will generate a win- win situation. Desire, vision and ceaseless perseverance will sustain the ages of the planet. Hopefully the mouse will stop smelling too!
